In March 2024, TaxAssist unveiled a new look series of brands to highlight that it can advise and support clients with much more than accountancy and tax services.
We know that most clients want and need more from their accountant, and detailed customer research identified that our previous branding did not reflect the range of innovative and personalised services that we offer for both business owners and individuals.
The evolved branding maintains the personal, friendly and professional feel that TaxAssist is renowned for and incorporates a new strapline ‘We can do more for you’, to reflect the extensive services, clients can expect.
As well as a refreshed logo and strapline, the TaxAssist brand has a new vibrant colour palette which highlights the complementary brands. This can be seen across our digital presence and will be applied to shops and offices in a planned rollout across the UK and Ireland over the next two years.
Refreshing the TaxAssist brand is a key development in the evolution of our business model and we are confident that the modern and impactful design sets the network up for future growth.
The new branding is intended to increase client attraction and retention and be even more appealing to potential TaxAssist Accountants looking to grow or buy a modern, professional accountancy practice with a clearly defined suite of services.
We understand that many people who join our network may have limited experience of marketing themselves or a business. That is why we have a large and highly experienced team of marketing and communications professionals on hand to provide extensive training, support and advice.
Your clients will come from a mix of your shop presence, local networking and marketing, referrals, national marketing campaigns and online presence.
The Business Development team focuses on generating client leads on behalf of the network and driving marketing initiatives to ensure TaxAssist Accountants maintains its market leading brand position. We have an experienced in-house, Inbound Sales team, who respond to a high number of lead enquiries generated by the targeted marketing campaigns run on behalf of the network. To kick start your business we provide you with an initial marketing campaign and we will guarantee 25 free qualified leads from our lead generation activities within 12 months. If for any reason this is not met, we will refund £200 per lead for reinvestment to the business under our no quibble guarantee.
With TaxAssist Accountants your practice will have the marketing power of a national brand. You will benefit from your own responsive website for each office or shop that you open and from our national TaxAssist client website. We will maintain your websites for you, monitoring performance, carrying out regular development, content and enhancements to deliver optimal performance in search engines. We leverage Google's algorithms and collaborate with a wide range of key directories to ensure you have strong rankings in local search results. We also provide a centralised email service, so your clients can be updated quickly and efficiently with information and relevant news stories.
When you join TaxAssist Accountants you will be engaging in public practice; therefore, if you belong to an accountancy institute, they will almost certainly require you to obtain a practising certificate.
The features of a practising certificate vary from institute-to-institute, but generally they demonstrate that you’ve been a member for a specified number of years and are compliant with the institute’s regulations, for example, on Continuing Professional Development (CPD), ethics and professional indemnity insurance.
The application process and timescales to obtaining a practising certificate are dependent on your experience, the quality of your records, the institute to which you belong and other considerations. We would advise you to contact them direct to find out their requirements and how they apply to your personal circumstances.
We will discuss practising certificates further when you attend your Discovery Day.
Formed in 1995, we are the leading accountancy franchise with many years’ experience of operating a substantial national network of branded offices that is well recognised and respected.
We have a highly visible presence with over 250 franchised areas across the country, operating from over 400 shops and offices. The shop front brand is supplemented by the many branded cars driving around the country, national advertising, online presence and marketing collateral. We constantly look to be at the forefront in terms of brand awareness, technical training and support for business growth and our software discounts and complementary business services which our franchisees can offer their clients, means in our opinion, that we are the market leader who’s offering far outweighs the competition.
In 2022, we launched TaxAssist Financial Services, making TaxAssist Accountants shops the one-stop-shops for all our clients’ financial needs. This will further increase revenue streams, recurring income opportunities and commission payable to franchisees.
All of the Support Centre staff are committed to supporting the franchise network and their clients with no other business interests to take their focus away from the importance of assisting the network.
The five executive directors have a breadth of business experience which they bring to the franchise. Daren Moore FCCA, has over 26 years of expertise in the accounting industry, having worked his way up to a member of the Management Board of Price Bailey, where he had an outstanding track record of achievement. Sarah Robertson is a Chartered Marketer who previously operated her own Marketing and PR company. James Mattam has spent his entire full-time career with TaxAssist and has vast experience in IT, marketing, business development and training. Mike Melling is the first TaxAssist Accountants franchisee to serve as an Executive Director and franchisees are able to benefit from his knowledge and understanding of running a practice. He also brings with him extensive international business experience prior to joining the franchise. Nic Redfern trained with Ernst & Young and has spent his career working with fast growing businesses in the financial services and digital sectors. He brings his experience to support the team through TaxAssist's next phase of growth.
We would need your CV and Personal Information Form to assess your suitability before giving names and contact details out. We will give you access to the whole network, after you have attended a Discovery Day, and we would encourage you to speak to at least six franchisees as part of your research.
Many accountants have joined us with an existing block of clients. They made the decision to join the TaxAssist Accountants network because they could see that by utilising the TaxAssist brand and systems they could grow their practice to the next level.
There is a reduced franchise fee of £9,975 + VAT if you join with a block of fees (subject to a minimum fee base of £50,000). We will allow the fees introduced or acquired to be kept in a separate pool and for one year there will be no Management Service Fee on these fees.
After twelve months, these fees will be amalgamated with other fees acquired during the TaxAssist Accountants Franchise term to form one pool and full Management Service Fees will be payable on the total pool of fees.
The term of the Franchise Agreement is five years, but this is renewable by you every five years for an administration fee of £750 – assuming you have operated the franchise as set out in the Franchise Agreement including meeting your minimum targets.
In most cases, we anticipate franchisees will renew the Franchise Agreement to continue the franchise every five years until they dispose of it at some future date. We also now offer at our discretion a 10-year plus Franchise Agreement.
Yes, the client base is a considerable asset built up and owned by you and we will work with you to plan your exit strategy/succession planning.
The value of your business is calculated as a multiple of your gross recurring fees. Current industry averages are between 0.8 and 1 multiplied by the gross recurring fees. The TaxAssist Accountants brand attracts a premium, and we are achieving multiples up to 1.4 times annual billing.
There are various deferred fees to consider which are laid out in our Franchise Agreement, which you would factor into your selling price.
Yes, you will need to open a shop before the end of your first year at TaxAssist Accountants.
Our dedicated support team will help you through every stage of setting up your shopfront location in the most efficient and convenient way possible. We'll walk you through everything from finding the right premises, negotiating your lease and planning permission through to refurbishment, staffing advice and holding your launch event.
High streets are continually evolving, but choosing the right location, means that TaxAssist Accountants will stand out as the one-stop-shop local hub for businesses and individual taxpayers in their community. It is a permanent advert that performs day and night, right throughout the year. Our shops are not necessarily placed on the high street, but highly visible locations where clients will easily see and find us.
Our network are proud of their shops and they continue to generate significant levels of new business and are key to our franchise model. Your shop will provide visibility, credibility, walk-in business and brand reinforcement and will help you to achieve the growth that we both seek.
If we offer you a franchise, you can reserve an exclusive postcode territory for 30 days for which we require a deposit of 10% of the Franchise Fee.
If you enter into a Franchise Agreement with us, then the deposit will be credited against the Franchise Fee. If for any reason the Franchise Agreement is not signed before two weeks prior to the Commencement Date, then we will agree to refund the deposit less a sum to cover any expenses incurred by us.
We understand that you would naturally wish to avoid any unnecessary duplication and expenditure, but because we have correctly identified a niche in the market, our training is specifically tailored to address that niche and nothing else. Past experience has shown that even fully qualified accountants will benefit from full participation in our training course. The need to go on all of the training does depend on whether you already have clients and are looking to bring those in to the TaxAssist network.
You will be allocated an exclusive marketing territory defined by postcode boundaries. No other TaxAssist Accountant can market directly in your area or vice versa.
When you and other franchisees carry out local advertising in publications covering more than one franchise area then the normal procedure is to share costs and divide out responses according to the geographical areas covered by you. However, should you receive a genuine recommendation from a potential client outside your exclusive marketing territory then you can act for that person.
Yes, we will be pleased to give you a copy of the draft Franchise Agreement following the attendance of one of our Discovery Days.
A fee matrix and digital pricing calculator are provided on our support site to enable you/your staff to produce a competitive quote for any client, depending on their circumstances.
It also suggests services which the client should be offered so nothing is forgotten. The fee can then be emailed to the potential client as a quote, as agreed during the meeting, and enable them to have clarity of the services they will be provided with and the price for this.
You will receive full training and guidance on how to utilise this tool, but the final decision on the exact amount is up to you.
This is really down to you, but we want you to build up your turnover and profits consistently, aiming for 400+ clients with a turnover of £300,000 + after 5 years. Some franchisees are happy to maintain this level, comfortable with both the income generated and being relatively light touch on the business, while other franchisees continue to work full-time on the business pushing it past the £500,000 turnover level.
Our training covers the staffing requirements for your business, and we expect a third of your turnover to cover the costs of running your franchise, with a third payable for your staff, leaving you with a third of your turnover as net profit.
Yes, there will be an additional cost because the franchise fee caters for only one person. We make our training course costs as reasonable as we can for partners/staff etc., because it is beneficial for both franchisee and franchisor to have a well-trained network. Please ask for further details on costs on or after your Discovery Day.
Full and professional initial and ongoing training is provided to all franchisees. Accountancy and tax training is provided by in-house staff and specialist training partners and the initial training course is included in the franchise fee.
The TaxAssist Academy provides a comprehensive range of ongoing technical and business training courses for you and your staff on a regional/online/self-paced basis. The majority of our courses are delivered at no additional costs or have a very modest fee.
We hold regular update days, and have an award-winning support website which provides access to technical releases, marketing strategies and templates, online tutorials, advice, additional service providers, training materials, practice management tools, a pricing calculator and fee matrix and the ability to update your own website.
To ensure professional standards are maintained throughout the network, each TaxAssist Accountant is mandated to undertake 21 hours minimum of structured Continual Professional Development per year.
